* First Prize, College Division - 16th Annual Iowa Composers Forum Student Composers Competition
Premiered March 30, 2011 at Luther College
Sympathetic Vibrations
Ingrid Scott, flute
Hannah Shatzer, oboe
Sarah Limper, clarinet
Trio for flute, oboe, and clarinet was commissioned by clarinetist Sarah Limper and her trio, Sympathetic Vibrations. It received its premiere at our recital my senior year at Luther. In February 2012 it was awarded first prize in the college division of the 16th Annual Iowa Composer's Forum Student Composers Competition.
The piece is in three contrasting movements: The first is a driving opener that is fast-paced and almost never lets up, reminiscent of an engine, earning it the title rpm - revolutions per minute. The second movement, Crystalline, contains dissonant but tonal harmonies giving it a dense, shining, bright sonority like that of a translucent gem. The final movement is bouncy and jovial, but never tense or too anxious in nature.
