Through the Lowland Valley (2012)
for trumpet and piano
Premiered March 11, 2012 at Luther College
Dr. Richard Tirk, trumpet
Dr. Jessica Paul, piano
Through the Lowland Valley was written for my former trumpet teacher Dr. Richard Tirk. The piece features the importance of dialogue between the trumpet and piano, each taking a turn painting the picture of the winding, expansive valley through which they travel. The piece opens dramatically, establishing the overwhelming grandeur of the valley before them. From there, the duo quickly embarks on their travels and into the first theme. The second section shows the two instruments taking a break from their journey, playfully weaving the new melody around one another. After a short reiteration of the introduction, the team returns to the seriousness of their venture and continue onward.
